All the talk of Balsa wood and HR66 builds lately inspired me to take a stab at a new build for Bluegrass. Based it on a model I have of a 1959 El Camino (w/ fins! ;D). Doesn't look much like the picture on the box, but it helped to have something to look at as I went along... Secret underneath view for Beaker and 3cubdad - thanks for the inspiration. But don't tell anyone else - it's hollow underneath! Chassis will be thin pine rail, Balsa canopy just rides on top. Bubba

COOL! ;D
Looks awesome!
What do you use to route the inside out with? Its super smooth. Mine didn't look anywhere near the clean.
You right about the Balsa dust. That stuff is nasty. I got one good wiff and coughed for and hour. Definately will where a mask next time.
See ya

...What do you use to route the inside out with? Its super smooth. Mine didn't look anywhere near the clean. Scott Beakerboys No routing. If you a little closer you will see "seams" at every corner. It's actually a "build up" job rather than a "route out" job, the sides are a long 3/8" thick strip and all the other pieces were cut to fit between them and glued together with Wal Mart el cheapo super glue. Made a couple mistakes on the hood. The "grille" and "hood" pieces were a little thin, so after I glued them together and started to round off the front it didn't take much rounding to open a hole at the corner . Just glued another small corner piece into the gap and went back to work with the belt sander. The hood is two pieces, if you look real close you'll see a transverse line between the front of the windshield and the back of the manifold. If I had been a little sharper, the hood and the piece that the cab rests on would have all been one piece. Initially I thought I was just gonna have the cab rest on the edges of the side strips, but after some sanding the cab was a little too narrow and I decided to insert the extra piece for the cab to rest on rather than building a wider cab. Bubba p.s. the cab is a hollow cube as well All total, including manifold (0.03 oz.), the canopy is still only about 0.3 oz with sealing done but no paint.

WOW !! What color(s) will you be painting it ? It started out as Testor's Rattle Can GTS Blue Pearl, 'cuz I had a can sittin' around with just enough (I thought) left to cover it and that color kind of matched the picture of the El Camino model on the box. Have you ever been just about to finish a paint job when you suddenly get nuthin' but air out of the can? So I let that dry, light sanded it nice and smooth and finished her off with another can I had sittin' around - Testor's Rattle Can Prowler Purple (metallic). Still debating what to do with accents, I'm thinking less might be more with this particular build. Gotta paint the windows black, and maybe a silver stripe along the bottom and accent on the fins? Probably frisket and paint the stripe on the bottom, might Silver Sharpie the fins. Bubba p.s. Actually thought this morning about stopping off at the hobby store and getting another can of the Blue and going back to blue. Have I told you how out of my element I feel when it comes to paint and paint jobs? Not what you would call an "artistic soul" by any means. Any thoughts on blue vs. purple?

Bubba OK Bob, here she is: Stuck with the Testor's Prowler Purple Metallic (28123), added a Sterling Silver Metallic (28141) stripe and some black (28131) windows. Covered it all with the Ultra Gloss Clearcoat (28139). As with all Bubba specials, don't look to close lest you see my thumbprints LOL Bubba
