I let the 8 year old build his scout car by himself this year (except for the band saw and then the sander after he buzzed his finger a good one). I was real proud of him for all of the work he did drilling the holes, weighing the car, prepping the axles and wheels. However, on the last wheel, he got excited and rowdy while burnishing the graphite and heated up the bore for the dominant front wheel. He wants to send the car to PWDracing to "show those pros what an 8 year old can do" and testing/ time trial before the District Race in a few weeks , but will go back to his mom's house after school today. We don't have time to prep a new wheel before sending it off on Wednesday. Should I send it off as is?? Should I send another prepped wheel that he didn't prep as a back up to be changed if it doesn't work?? I guess I'll have to have him prep another wheel when he comes back next week, but for this race, it's not possible. We don't have a test track, so I'm not sure how this car will behave. Thoughts?

I would change the wheel. I see nothing wrong with giving a little help.

I would prep another wheel. I personally would explain to him why a new wheel was added and let him decide if he wants to prep another.

I agree, it's a small help that would do a lot of good in consideration of what the boy put into it.

I'd prep a new wheel. The worst thing that could happen is for the car to have serious issues that would kill his confidence, and make him not want to do it again.
In the least, I would ask him as Evo stated. You could explain he can prep another of his own before the scout race coming up.

If it has a second front wheel, they could be swapped if he prepped both. At a minimum, make sure that it has a fair chance to demonstrate his efforts by having a prepped wheel on it somehow.
