Jeff - I feel your pain. I'm down here in Fairfax VA and in the 3 yrs my son and I have been doing this, the first time we see how our car runs is on race day, then it's too late. I know the Boy Scout store in Springfield sells practice tracks (plastic) which I guess is better than nothing. Also there's an online vendor (ABC pinewood derby.com I think) that sells plastic test tracks as well. A proper aluminum practice track is outside my price range and I could never justify it with my wife!
