Thanks for the Birthday wishes guys! Now I've wished many of you happy birthday before, and I've read many of the birthday wishes saying things like "do something you love" etc... but my normal "fun" stuff (i.e. fishing/hunting/playing with cars) was pretty much precluded by a full day of kid activities scheduled... so after my daughters dance practice/a trip to the sporting goods store to get new skates and breezers (Max has grown and inch in the past five weeks!)/hockey practice and a Cub Scout Pack apple orchard outing, my wife and daughter went to a Halloween party for my daughters dance group leaving Max and I home alone, so with not much else to do we decided we'd be adventurous... and having heard an advertisement on the radio for such earlier in the day, Max and I decided we'd celebrate my birthday together in true father-son redblooded American male fashion... by attending... the Minnesota North Star Roller Girls Roller Derby! ;D When I heard the radio commercial, I remembered watching roller derby as an 8? or so year old kid growing up, the Thunderbirds, the Bombers... I used to LOVE watching roller derby every Saturday on the UHF channels! In fact, at the time, my favorite song was "Roller Derby Queen" by Jim Croce: " She was five foot six, two-fifteen, a bleach blond Bomber with a streak 'o mean! She knew how to knuckle and she knew how to scuffle and fight... And the roller derby, program said, that she was built like a 'frigerator with a head!." So I figured, what better way to celebrate turning 45 (dreaded middle age!) than to relive the fond memories of my youth with Mad Max joining in on the fun! So off to the roller derby we went! What a blast! The ticket only cost $12 (kids under 10 are free), Max got to eat his favorite meal (hot dogs and diet coke) and dad enjoyed a couple of icy cold beers... total cost for the entire evening was under $30... a heck of a lot cheaper than going to a Vikings game and from my perspective a WHOLE lot more entertaining! Max's take on the whole event was something like "Dad, roller derby is basically hotties who can skate fast and ladies with big bottoms who try to block the hotties and knock 'em down"... a pretty apt description you've ever watched roller derby. We sat on the floor right by the track, and at one point a tall blonde with "Naughty Kitty" embroidered on her back sat down right next to us and Max whispered in my ear "Dad, that lady's one of the roller derby ladies." I, of course didn't even notice her until Max pointed her out as I was intently focused on the on-track action , but given Max's interest I felt compelled to snap a quick pick of Ms. Kitty with my cell phone... (I've have to catagorize her as one of the "hotties" as opposed to one of the ladies with big bottoms). So all in all it was a perfect birthday capped by a great father/son bonding experience at the Roller Derby! Slow Steve P.S. In looking up the "North Star Roller Girls" web site to get the logo to post above, I found Naughy Kitty's MySpace page... and... wouldn't you know it... she's a HUNTER/FISHERWOMAN!!! (Only in Minnesota!). Now for some reason I can't get another line of that Jim Croce "Roller Derby Queen" song out of my head... " ~The night that I fell in love with a Rooooooolller Derby Queen~"!!! ;D For Tory's enjoyment (since he was the one who requested some more critter pics), I'll take artistic liberty and post a few of Naughty Kitty's pics from her MySpace page, since they're theme appropriate, and one pic from last weekend's South Dakota pheasant expedition (trust me, you'll like the Naughty Kitty pics a lot more than mine with the pheasants!)...

Hey Slow,
We just got back from the Cub Camporee so I'm a couple of days late but Happy B-Day!!!
I'd always heard that rule number 1 of dating was to never date a girl with intimate knowledge of hand to hand combat or small firearms.... after those pics, I may have to re-consider!
