The rule says the main body must be made of wood. The car body is all wood. Can you use wood and carbon fiber to make a frame? The axles would still be set up in wood? Does anyone have an answer? Thanks, Wayne (CUTTERRACING)

Thanks, Wayne (CUTTERRACING) I can answer your question Cutter. The rule of thumb is simply this. If you remove all non-wood components from the car except the wheels, axles and glue, and the car will still look like a hotrod and still function as a pinewood derby car (i.e., if could be staged and would run down the track and stay in one piece), then the "main body structure" is made of wood. Virtually any material can be added to enhance the strength or looks of the car, so long as those parts are not what is holding the car together. For example, you could not have a dowel in the front where the front axle holes are drilled, and a dowel in the back where the rear axle holes are drilled, with the two dowels connected by a carbon fiber rod or plate. In HR66, there is the added requirement that the car should also look like a hotrod. So, in the HR66 division the car has to not only function as a pinewood derby car before non-wood components are added, but it must also look like a hot rod also. Hope that answers your question. Steve H.

Steve, First, don't use the term "rule of thumb" around people that work with wood. Everybody doesn't have all their digits. Working with wood things happen sometimes! You jumped the gun on me! I'm not making a carbon fiber frame, I'm trying to add character to the car so it looks more like a HOT ROD! Detail and creativity makes a car look good. Fast is also a plus! If I could get both, I've out done myself!!! I use plastic motors on my car and I need a motor mount that looks good. (If I cut those crop circles in the car , the motor will fall right through!) My son and I like "HOT RODS", so I 'm going to keep trying till I (we) get it right! Thanks for the info, Wayne(Cutter)
