Anyone know where I could pick up a fairly cheap scroll saw that would be easy to transport ? BSA workshops will be starting soon and I would like to purchase one for the boys that I could also keep in my shed and not take up to much room.

Lucky 13 I got mine at Home Depot...It was reasonably priced and doesn't take up much room at all and is easy to carry around. I think it was around $100 ;D

Home Depot on-line only shows a Delta model with a stand for $219.00. However, Ryobi.com shows a SC164VS model that looks right up your alley. Not sure why it doesn't appear on the Home Depot web site, they have lots of other Ryobi stuff in the $99 neighborhood. You may just want to call ahead to see if it is in stock or can be ordered. Lowes on-line shows 2 models, a Hitachi with a table for $159.00 and a Task Force portable for $99.00. Never heard of Task Force before, but I don't get out much My take would be to pursue the Ryobi, we've had pretty good luck with our $99 Drill Press and $99 Band Saw from them.

I think Home Depot, the store, has alot of things that aren't on the web site.

My favorite tool store is Harbor Freight. It's like Lowes and Home Depot's tool departments on steroids.
CLEVELAND,OH 6272 PEARL ROAD 440-886-2170
You can also buy on line if there is not a store near you.

I have gotten my 3 most recent scoll saws from HD. The Ryobi is usually $99 but goes on sale from time to time. I got one of the larger Dremel ones that had a side disc sander - AVOID THAT. too much with Kids around it.
Menards also has saws in the sub-$100 range but I have switched to the Ryobi just for the name -- cost and quality are about the same. . . most all of the tools are now Ryobi in the workshops. I usually get my spare blades at Menards.
The saw will last for about 3 years with proper care. Duty cycle of 50 cars per week for 15 weeks per year.

Thanks for all the responses guys !! Last year we used coping saws, what a pain !! After the first workshop I went to my father-in-laws and pre-cut a bunch of different bodies on his band saw for the boys to choose from !!

I got it for $99 at Home Depot. I have a scroll saw but mostly use the bandsaw. I like a wide blade since I dont cut a lot of curves. You can get a blade as thin as 1/8"

I get their ads in the mail. I'll have to drive up there and check out their saws.

Bob,
You'll be hard pressed to find a better scroll saw for less than the Central Machinery 93012 1VGA currently on sale for $59.00 at Harbor Freight.

Bob, You'll be hard pressed to find a better scroll saw for less than the Central Machinery 93012 1VGA currently on sale for $59.00 at Harbor Freight. Steve Dear Santa: Please bring us a scroll saw for Christmas. Regards, Team Bubba (We might have to pick one up - we don't let the boys use the band saw and we want them to get to the point where Dad doesn't touch their cars except for fine tuning. Dad currently does all the "heavy" cuts with the band saw and they use a coping saw for "light" cuts.)
