What lathe would you recommend for turning pinewood derby whe-, uh, I mean pens or something. I'm thinking about turning some pens for Christmas presents. Of course, I would never purchase a lathe just for turning wheels...
Thanks.

Taig micro lathe. Get the metal working set up. Supposed to be accurate to .001" About $400 after you get a motor for it> Good luck.

I got a Sherline 4000 and it works perfect. I got mine off ebay for around $250. However, the prices on them have gone up over the past couple of years and they are going for around $350 to $450 used. New ones go for probably $600 to $800.

I got the Seig. At least I think I did. Box arrived about 18 months ago, and its really heavy. I assume the lathe is inside.

I bought the Harbor Freight Central Machinery 7X10 lathe. I think it would be better if I had the 7X12 as the 10 is a bit crowded. Also got a quick change tool post set from littlemachineshop.com- a real huge benefit as it makes tool changes and vertical tool adjustments a snap - no shimming required! I make my own wheels now except for BSA stocks.
