Thought some of you might get a kick out of this, expecially those whose kids are already older... So my fourth grader comes home with a social studies project on explorers. They could either dress up like an explorer and give a presentation, or they could build a some type of a model boat of an explorer. Now, being a normal 4th grade boy, naturally the choice was "Build the boat!!!" Not just any boat, but again, being a normal 4th grade boy, he wanted a Viking Ship! A quick trip to the local hobby store yielded NO Viking Ship kits, and those kits that they did have, at $150.00, we'd be lucky to have done before HighSchool! The idea of the report was brought up again and swiftly met with, "but all the other boys are building boats!" Ok, so now it's on! A little internet research, (and of course no time to mail order any of the kits from online, plus a certain arrogance that said "We don't need no stickin kits!") and we were ready to go! Throw in some PWD skills and this is what we ended up with! I put the car in the picture so you'd have an idea of the size! May not be the fanciest model there, but we had a good time doing it together! Steve 3CubDad

Hey, maybe the next specialty race could be a rain-gutter regatta at Bluegrass? Have you floated it yet? Did you use a special sealer to minimize friction with the water? Did you lighten the canvas for the sail? Is the mast a specially polished/trued pole or just the standard one? Did you go for the aerodynamic design on the oars? Any special weapons like flames out the front? Is there a special method for getting the proper COG?

Good looking ship 3Cub !! I might have to talk my boys into making a scaled down version of that for their rain-gutter regatta boats. I'm getting a little tired of making pirate ships every year (unfortunately they're not ;D) and a viking ship would be a nice change !! Lucky 13
