Furor Over Proposed Shift in Scouts No-Gays Policy
I just found out that my boys scout group will no longer be in existence if this happens. I don't want to step on anybody's toes or start trouble on this board but have the scout leaders of this country lost their mind?

ZZ - Why would you lose your local group ? Are the leaders going to quit ?? My understanding is that they are not going to disallow it the National level and will push the decision down to the local level (Councils I assume). I was given a link to send comments to our local Exec. If your son's unit dissolves, find another that suits your needs !

We had our committee meeting Tuesday and they were saying it could be up to the individual Packs? Quadad, I see it more from the Council. I and a few were approached by our local media and we just turned them down and all email's were forwarded to our Council. (Mid-America)

Personally, I'm no gay rights activist or anything. But it doesn't bother me too much either way. I'm not going to loose one bit of sleep if gays are allowed in scouts. Guess what, they are already in, you just don't know it. It's not like young boys go around admitting that sort of thing for the most part. I don't believe being around a gay person is going to make my son gay. If it works that way, we'll all be gay soon If anyone thinks they are not in some way connected with a gay person, ( deal with, talk to at work, hang out with, family member or whatever) I think they are kidding themsleves. I have worked with gay people before, sometimes i suspected, sometimes I didn't. It doesn't bother me anymore. Times are a changin. Better to accept them IMO. I think the churches views are craxy! If they approve or not, punish all the boys. just because of a policy. Silly!

Our pack is sponsored by our church. I do not want to be disrespectful to the rights or beliefs of anyone but I do feel the need to support and respect the church's opinion.

I agree Bid Daddy, I don't mean for people to disrespect their church. When I re-read my post, I see it could be taken in the wrong way about the church part. I do not mean " all churches are silly". My wife is a decicated catholic, I was brought up "old school" baptist, but I am non practicing. I respect any church or religous beliefs anyone may have. I'm just saying that, the same kids that belong to the scouts now, are the same ones that will be there after the policy changes. Know what I mean? Who gets hurt? Only the kids.. The church doesn't need to change it's policy, to allow scouts to meet in their basement.

Well, ZZ, the good news is that you can respect your church and still keep your boy(s) in Scouts. If the Church maintains this view and does not wish to renew their annual charter you can join a different Cub Scout Pack. You always have that option, though typically Scouts do more choosing on their own when it comes time to join a Boy Scout Troop. Who knows, maybe cooler heads will prevail when that time comes. This is where your Chartered Org Rep plays a role (I know, I have that job too for a Church sponsored Pack).
I sure hope you don't give up on Scouting because its very hard to replace the life lessons that boys get during their Boy Scout years - I have seen this up close and personal with my boys !

After reading the article, I realize I was only thinking of "gay kids" being allowed in scouts. I was not thinking of gay "leaders". It certainly adds to the argument and causes me to think twice i must admit. I've had the thoughts of a male predator in a leadership position in something my son was involved in, be it scouts or a priest after hours in a church setting. But the real problem is, a predator is.... a predator. The same issue prevails in the catholic church, but clearly they do not allow gay priests. So in the end, how much does this rule change really? A predator can work himself in no matter the rule changes. But if this is really the case, then don't we need good leaders now more than ever to look out for the kids? It's kind of along the same idea as gun control. The criminals & mentally unstable don't give a crap about gun laws but they continue to screw it up for the rest of us. But hey, this a pinewood derby forum, so let me lighten up... lol. Sorry guys if I'm getting to "political".

I don't think everyone needs to bend over backward for the government. A lot of church's will get rid of BSA and replace it. The only positive thing is that there will be a lot of used tracks on eBay.

I agree that the leader issue will be the most concerning part of it for parents. The BSA decision has been put off until at least May.
