Greetings PWD enthusiasts and fellow PWDR league racers. Another derby for my sons pack has come and gone. As a Weblo 1, he was attempting to be the first ever in the long history of the pack to be the first scout ever to 4peat as pack speed champion.
Having spent a considerable amount of my leisure time building cars and participating in league racing, not to mention a trip to the Blue Grass 2008, I decided to take a different approach to this years race. Now, I've always been one to lend a "hand" to those in need, but this year we decided to "help" considerably more to those less skilled in the art of PWD.
Let's start with a few pics of the workshop:
Carving the pine
Drilling for tungsten
The "Big" Saw
What is 5 oz about anyway?
The Pinewood ThinkTank
Where do we go from here
The Crowd
After the workshop was over, I took numerous phone calls and had multiple visits from at least 3 scout/parent teams. One group just needed some extra wheels and to borrow the WheelShaverXT. The other 2 needed complete build out. Several nights up till midnight working with others.
The Race:
Lineup
Take note of the blue EXT WB with Skull & Flames- see the 1/16" "notch on the FDW. HMMMM. More on that one later
The Anticipation:
Stressing over "technical" issues with the timer & software
Waiting Patiently
The "Officials"
And there they go
The Finish
And now for the results: NO we did not "4peat" we took second in pack. Second behind the Blue Skull car that I "helped" with
In addition all of the cars that we "helped" won for their dens. The boys were very happy. Lot's of high fives & even a few hugs.
We ended up winning den & second overall + "Fastest Looking" for design competition.
The Car up Close:
Specs: EXT WB, Full Weight BSA Wheels Hand Prepped, Stock Axles polished with DerbyDominator Polishing paper to 8000 grit. Axle heads- K-House Groove. C.O.G. just under 3/4". RW 2.5 neg. camber with the RR tool. FDW 1.5 pos camb.
Lubed with Maxv graphite.
Flame Stencils from Derbydoc.com
Airbrushed with acrylic- clear coat- Montana Gloss.
Wow. I think this was the longest post Ever.
Thanks to all of my friends at PWDR for helping us get to this level.
Oh, forgot to mention- after all was said and done, we took the top three cars and had a three heat run off (unofficial) before the race I turned the FDW axle to take a little off the rail- We beat the little blue car by a length three out of three
