I swore to myself, that after the Bluegrass and September races, that I would hang up the PWD stuff and concentrate on my real hotrods. Afterall, retirement is coming soon, and it would be easy to drift away into pinewood obscurity.........NOT!!! The urge to build yet another car struck again. Here's a peek at TwoShillings, my next stocker; The name is derived from the two shilling coin embedded in the body. Gonna try a solid rear axle and see how that works. The big trick will be on how to polish it. Don't know if the jaws in a drill press will bugger the opposite side when it grips the axle. I've got some 3/32" tool rod coming and found out the local hobby store carries music wire in the r/c plane section (some pretty neat stuff in that section!) Also, I've found that I can tap my Derby Worx SS wheels with a metric tap (M3x0.5) for a good fit on the 3/32" music wire. Again, something new to try So much for leaving .... besides, I'd miss you guys Later... Lee

Lee, Another awesome creation!
I am always inspired by your wood working abilities!
Polishing the solid rod is simple. Put a piece of masking tape on the side you are chucking up in the drill. That will protect it. The axle may wobble alittle bit with the tape on it so you may have to polish with sandpaper in between your two fingers applying pressure from both sides in a back and forth motion.
Let use know how the 3mm tap works out, I am curious about that. I have found that the maximum size axle you can use on SS wheels is .089. I guess the 3 mm tap makes the bore larger.
See ya

Thanks, Scott.
Appreciate the axle ideas, and yes, the 3mm. tap does open up the bore. I started with a 4x40 tap, then the 3mm. tap. The 3mm. seemed to dig too deeply by itself, so I started with the smaller tap first. Polishing what's left of the bore material may be a challenge, especially getting all of the residue from the cut threads. We'll see if water and a pipe cleaner will get the stuff out (using Micro Gloss for polishing).
Later...

Ahhhhh, Master ProQuest, I humbly bow before you. A grasshoppah doesn't deserve the praise of the mighty one ;D Thanks , man. Now, if I can only make it run in the same "universe" as you. Saw your latest times and choked!! You're good, and I mean that with much respect!! Sure would like to be a fly on your wall when you put a car together BTW, how'd you fare with Ike? I saw some pretty gruesome pic's of the area where Ike came ashore and was hoping you got out ok. You guys got HAMMERED, and seeing what the media didn't present to the public is heartbreaking. The clean-up is gonna be staggering Hopefully, Twoshillings will be ready for the December race and we can mix it up. Just keep doin' what you're doin'. Playing catch-up is frustrating, but it's making us all better builders Later... Lee

Hey Lee,
Thanks for the kind words. "Master ProQuest" -- has kind of a nice ring to it. Especially since Yoda and I have something in common -- we are about the same height. LOL.
You don't have to be a fly on the wall, just do what I did -- race here and ask questions. Virtually 100% of what I know (or believe) about Pinewood Derby I learned by racing here and asking tons of questions. I still do -- ask lots of questions that is. Thanks to the generosity of others who post on this board I was able to improve a lot. I went back and found the following post that I wrote on April 17 of last year -- just 18 months ago. I thought you might find it worthwhile:
Hey Bob.
I agree. Figuring them out (and building them) is the fun part. I'm pleased with how "Bad Habit II" ran, its just that in the past she's been faster than my other Rookie "ProQuest I," but not this time. And to be honest, I'm out of ideas for how to go faster.
This may be a topic for a new thread, but I hear tons of builders say they have to "tune" their cars. I don't really understand what it means to tune a car. I build the darn thing and if its fast I race it, if its slow I trash it and start over. Take "Tabasco" my pro stock entry for example, I put tons of hours into her -- highly polished speed axles from MV, SS wheels from Derby Worx, cog at 7/8", I could go on for pages. Should have run under 3.0 easily, but was closer to 3.1. If I knew how to "tune" I might be able to make some small adjustments and turn her into a real burner. Instead, when I get her back I'll probably remove the wheels and axles, cut the tungsten weights out, throw what's left away and try again. I have no idea how to tune a car. Can you or someone else share your expertise on how to tune a car? That may be a dumb question, but if I don't ask I'll never know. Sorry for such a long post, I guess, as we say in the mediation world, I'm venting my frustration. Thanks.
ProQuest/Steve H.
So, take it from "Master ProQuest" -- keep racing, keep asking, and sooner or later you will be able to snatch the pebble from my hand. ;D
Steve
P.s. Forgot to mention -- Ike left us without power for 17 days, but no injuries and little damage. We were very fortunate. Life is nearly back to normal. Thanks for asking.

Guess I'm gonna have to update my slogan. MPQIMH ( Master ProQuest Is My Hero). To you Peace and honor be, MPQ (a little Yoda sentence reversal thrown in, no extra charge). Bubba

Flash!!!...LATEST NEWS UPDATE... TwoShillings died last night... FILM AT 11 Learned a valuable lesson last night. Design your weight cavity or how/where the weights will go BEFORE making the car. Oh well, back to the drawing board and start again Later... Lee

Yeah, it does, 'cause I seem to get attached to each one I build, but....TwoShillingsII has already been cut with proper weight storage facilities in place!! Good thing this isn't for the November race
I should have known better...

Introducing........... TwoShillingsII Gonna try a solid rear axle (polished 3/32" tool steel rod) and the new DerbyWorx PineCar speed wheels. Right now, it weighs in at 4.93 so there's some room for primer/paint. Still up in the air for color choice though Should be ready for the December race Later... Lee

Lee,
I really don't think I would paint it if I were you. Of course I wouldn't paint it if I were me either, because I bite at painting. But the craftsmanship is really obvious without paint. Either way, beautiful work. What am I doing on the board with less than 48 hours until the overnight delivery deadline, when I haven't finished my truck, or even touched any of my other cars? I'd better get cracking.
