In my limited experience over the past several months with building Pinewood Derby cars, the one thing I have been most impressed with is what a great collective community it is that comprises the world of Pinewood Derby.
A few months back when Max and I were beginning to build our first ever Pinewood Derby car for Max's Pack race, I did a google search on "Pinewood Derby" and found some of the various forums, web sites and merchants that cater to the Pinewood derby community. I was really impressed with and appreciative of the amount of information sharing that was going on, as there was a veritable treasure trove of information out there to weed through, learn and draw conclusions from.
Now that I've had the opportunity to move from being a forum lurker/reader/information consumer to participant in the PWDRacing races, EVERY SINGLE PERSON I have come in contact with or had the pleasure to exchange correspondence with via posts or messages has been absolutely wonderful in terms of making Max and I feel welcome and offering to share advice, answer questions, and in general help us out. This is not something I have seen in the other competitive endeavors I have participated in the past (be it bass fishing, skeet shooting, or other competitive sports "back in the day")... and what a refreshing thing is it.
I'm sure that many of the folks who race PWD cars are very competitive and take this very seriously, and I realize that there are multiple merchants vying for people's dollars, but in doing so everyone I have encountered has exhibited great sportsmanship in the process and has acted with true class. This is something that is unfortunately lacking in so many areas of today's society, and it speaks volumes as to the culture of the Pinewood Derby world.
So my thanks and kudos to everyone who has helped Max and I on our journey so far, including in no particular order (but not limited to) ProQuest Steve, 3 Cub Dad Steve, BeakerBoys Scott, LA Sound John, Da Pine Dwayne, Derby Doc Tory, Lucky 13 Bob, Doc B Bob, Sappington, JK Kelly, Knotthead Lee, F.A.S.T. and of course Mr. Slick Warren. In the words of my 12 year old daughter, You Guys ROCK!
Thank you!
