Hi folks,
So I had input into our District rules this past year, and we based our revisions heavily off of the example set by the Northern Star Council rules, especially in regards to wheels, axles and lubrication. It was a change I was very glad to see, and I thank you guys for putting together a great set of Scout rules.
My question has to do with verifying legal wheels...specifically, how to best determine if material has been removed from the inside. For our last race, we had our inspector set up with a lighted magnifier on a gooseneck that he could use to peer into the insides of the wheels to look for any lathe marks. I did provide him some lathed wheels to compare to. I think this worked pretty well.
I've noticed that the latest revision of rules allows for clear air shields to be used inside of the wheels. Our rules don't specificially mention these, but they do say that the inside of the wheel has to be unobstructed. I guess I am worried that even clear shields would make it all the more difficult to see those already-difficult-to-see lathe marks on the inside of the tread. Has anybody had to inspect wheels with the shields in place? Can you offer any advice related to your experiences?

The nsc rules also state that if you inspect the easily they can/will be asked to remove the wheel. I inspected our district race this year it wasn't to hard to see if the wheels was lighten or not.

Were any of the cars that you inspected using the clear wheel shields? We had a couple. It did slow the inspection process down for the few cars we had to inspect
