Maybe you guys already knew this but I just heard it tonight at out Pack leadership meeting. The Council is pretty much doing away with the Webelo II rank by having Webelo I's bridge to Boy Scouts sooner. This may be a full on Cub Scout change and not just this Council. Our pinewood derby race is in Jan so Webelo II's will miss the entire derby season. Maybe the pinewood derby season could begin in the Fall. That might get the kids 5 years of derby instead of 4.

I hear you notsofast. I heard this 2014/2015 scout season is the last year for Web 2, thus making 2015 their last year racing at council. I wish they would carry pinewood derby into boy scouts. It seems right when the boys are finally old enough to do all the work themselves they pull the rug out. Once again, I think there's an opportunity here for the boy scouts to learn from the girl scouts. My 16 year old daughter has been racing pinewood derby in her local service unit since she was 8. And she has two more years to go!

I'm thinking here that this new setup will save me some money. I won't be buying the Block now but I'm dreading the tuning again with bent rear axles.

Its part of the new council rules.

That's a very generous offer but I can't let you see the secret dance we do before aligning and how we pass our car 3 times through smoke from the burned twigs of a rare tree in Asia just before the dance begins. I read somewhere that these are secrets that no one wanted us to know about.
About our families working together: At our Pack race a dad came up to me afterwards and asked if I had a relative that had a track. I had no idea what he was talking about but he didn't seem to believe me. It wasn't until I got here and watched the vid of last year's Council race and saw the name on the screen with crazy fast times. Then Cygnus eventually invites us over for tuning the night before the Council race and I understand what the comment at the Pack race was about.

For the love of Murphy don't bend those axles again! Take up Cygnus on his offer or buy that Block / Silver bullet. You'll need it anyway for all the league racing you'll be doing (you know you want too).

I'll think about a Block. I would like to try and improve our design over last year and that is about the only thing left I know to do...canted rear holes. We reprepped wheels after each event and that meant a lot of time spent aligning. It may not be a big factor because my boy might decide he wants a car that looks like a battleship with guns and stacks or a bi-plane with a wingwalker on top.

There are FAR better ways than bending axles..predrilled pinewwod blocks are pretty cheap compared to a buying a block, unless you are going to league race then it it a necessity!!and you still have freedom of design with a pre drilled block.I believe Mr.Slick has a drill fixture at the shop for use.and yes (You know you want to race!!) No peer pressure here..lol

The current plan is that ANYONE who is a Cub Scout as of January 1st, 2015 would be eligible to race as that rank in the Council Pinewood Derby. We are even thinking of adding a "Boy Scout" division to encourage them to keep racing. We are working on getting this addressed since it would help provide another link from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts when the new 5th grade Boy Scouts come back to the Pack for a Pinewood Derby race. The inviting of the 5th graders back for a Pack race or a District race would be dependent on the Pack or the District. I can invite them to the Chief Black Dog District race and the Council race.
