Our district race calls for only the use of dry lube such as graphite for the axles. Last year at the race there were a couple cars that we were pretty sure were running oil instead of graphite. They had almost no noise when you spun the wheel and had a different sound to them going down the track. The rest of the judges were not keen on pulling an axle to check so that is not an option. Does any one know of any test that can be done to check for this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you have a concern then just have the racer re-graphite the car prior to allowing the car to make it through check-in or change the rules to have everbody re-graphite their cars prior to the finals..... every graphite racer will jump at the chance and the oil racers will not.

No tests....
Also applying graphite right before the race is BAD.... it needs to be worked in to get optimal performance....

No tests.... Also applying graphite right before the race is BAD.... it needs to be worked in to get optimal performance.... Well, this may be the experience for some racers and with the graphite they use but my best results are with applying fresh graphite just before racing. On my 39' track I consistently get my fastest times with the first run after reapplying the graphite, with a gradual slowing with more runs. After 6 runs I add more graphite and the speed comes back, then slows again with additional runs. I see very few exceptions to this. I used this approach with my 2011 Spec-Tuner car "Bright Star". I added more graphite just before its proxy races. It has the Spec-Tuner PWDR track record for 6 runs and single fastest run.
