Hello everyone,
Thought I post and say hello to everyone out there and share a little about myself and my Cub Scout.
I have worked for several years as a Wood and Metal Patternmaker (we make the tooling used to make metal castings), so I am well trained as a machinist and woodworker. My 6 year old son (Aaron) joined Cub Scouts at the beginning of the year and the Pinewood Derby was the thing he was looking forward to the most.
I did a lot of research on-line and we came up with a design for his car. We made 2 cars that look nearly identical. One car I used to show him what needed to be done and he would do it on his car.
We had results beyond our wildest dreams. Aaron placed 1st in his den and 1st in the pack! I placed 2nd in the open class (I only put 5 oz of weight in my car).
At the district race last Saturday, Aaron placed 2nd in Tiger Cubs and 10th overall. In the open class Aaron placed 1st with a ducted fan car, I placed 2nd with my car having added more weight, and my 5 year old nephew placed 3rd with a car we helped him build after he watched Aaron at the pack race and wanted to race too.
The PWD bug has hit the family. We are looking to learn more and continue the excitement throughout the "off-season."

If you had a degree in mechanical engineering or chemical engineering we all would just give up! Hope to see you on the track soon! ;D Welcome!

Jim: Congrats on your 1st pinewood derby experience with your family! My son started scouts this year as a Tiger and we share your enthusiasm. Fortunately, there is no "off season" here. You can feed your addiction with the rest of us. I entered my 1st race with the group today...will be licking my wounds until next race! This is a great bunch of people with lots of information to share. I always get a quick response to my questions whether posted or sent directly to someone. And, the vendors here are wonderful resources for things you will need and are eager to help if you have a problem. I am sure that if you participate in some league racing, you will improve your skills and learn some new things to teach your son for next year. Jump in with both feet, the water is fine.
