Hello All, This is a great message board. I wish I had found this before my son and I built his PWDC. We built the car and won the Wolf Den race and then placed second in the pack race. We were surprised that we finished so well, considering I found this board and now know we can do much better next year. Now we have two weeks before the district race. I am wondering if we should do anything with the wheels and/or axles between races. At this point I have filed and polished the axles up to 2000 grit & pumice - clean with alcohol and then packed with graphite twice, polished the wheel bore with pipe cleaner and graphite, sanded the outside of wheel up to 2000 grit. Running on three wheels and riding the rail. The car ran the track 14 times. Attachments:

Welcome to the PWDR Forum! Great job at your pack race! Build PWD Cars is a great way of spending time with your boy!
We ran our pack race last night and my Son did very well! We have 25 Scouts in our Pack and we had 25 Cars in the race! 100% participation!
My Son built approximately 80% of his car and did a great job!
My Son did something that I never thought of: He took a Q-tip that fit snug in the wheel bore and burnished the bore with graphite. Before this, we used to use pipe cleaners for burnishing.
Before the burnishing he polished the bores with a tight Q-tip and plastic polish. He washed out the bores with soap and water. Then, he polished the bores again with a pipe cleaner.
He beat the 2nd place car by 0.1 seconds. This RR car was never run on a track before the race. It was built over the weekend.
The second and third place cars were mostly built by me with some help from the Scouts at one of the three workshops at our house.
A few things to consider are you running a straight car or a rail rider (RR)? Did you car wiggle down the track? If so, you can gain some speed by doing some more alignment.
I would polish the outside hub of the wheel where the axle head makes contact.
Hope this helps! Murph Shining Light Tribology
