Our Cub Scout pack is getting smaller . When our Pack has it's Derby, the race will be over very quickly. In an effort to extend the fun for the day, I came up with an idea...... We have never had an adult/open race in the Pack. Not sure if we really want to go that route. We do, however, have some highly competitive parents in the group. This seemed like a fun sort of outlet. On race day, during check-in time, the adults (or kids that are older than Cub Scouts) team up into two person teams. Each team gets a new kit and (with a nod to Iron Chef) ONE HOUR to build it, weight it, tune it, etc.. We'll see which team built the fastest car after the Scout race.... What do you think? Sound like fun?

Hope you do it and can't wait to hear how it went. steepslope

One thing to keep in mind is how will tool work? Will folks bring their own?
Will they have to use the same ones everyone else does? If so, how does it work out for those who are last in line for say a drill to do axles? Bandsaw to cut out body? That's time lost.
As you can tell, it's been kicked around in our area - always questions that come up.
Please let us know how it works out and what you did.

you could have the car bodies pre-cut & sanded all the same style let everybody bring thier own drill for wheels & axle work that help out & save time.

Or allow them to bring their own tools with the requirement that all their equipment must fit entirely into a box of given dimensions, such as 8X12X6. That seems plenty of room for a hand drill, coping saw, rasps, files, drills, lube, kit, clamps, PBT, adhesives. (Did I leave anything out?) I'd personally like a bit of room to stash a tuning board, but ...

I would have a problem with doing it that way, at least in my pack. We always seem to have a parent or 2 that never shows up, just a drop and run. I wouldn't want the kid to feel bad with no one around. Also, I have 2 single moms with no clue about the cars, I usualy end up helping out just to get them done. but hey, if ya can pull it off, thats great.

Hey Stan! I have not chatted with you since you were giving me a hard time about my tooling for cutting wheels! Anyway, your tooling set-up works very well! Murph

Mandrel, on chuck side, for cutting wheels. I was using long pin. You used short. Short works well for new wheels. Old wheels needed long pin. We don't have to worry about old wheels anymore. LIM-2 has already hung up its old wheels and currently is running on a set of #2s. Your mandrel pin works Stan. I can cut wheels consistently with runout under 0.001" with little if any scrap. Thank you kindly for the information. You got me speed Stan.

Oh, Okay! Glad it works for you, too. You should be able to get runout better than 0.001" with that setup, though. I don't have enough patience to work 'em without reaming the bores to get good fit for the mandrel. I've been told that the 0.098" ream produces inferior results, but it seems to hold its own around here. Dunno how it would stand up against you hot builders, though. I need to shut this off ... getting long for off topic comments.

We are having a Building Workshop tomorrow for the boys (and parents) who need help getting their cars built. Always want to help those without tools, no parents to help, etc..... This is an additional event to allow the non-Scouts to have a liitle fun and competition...... Still working on the "Rules". Will post them this weekend.
