I just wanted to say hello and to introduce myself. This is our third year doing the Pinewood Derby. My son is a ten year old Cub Scout/Webelo. He is the current Overall Champion for north Texas & southeast Oklahoma in the Pinewood Derby-- undefeated in over 100 races last year. However, I am really nervous about this year. Last year, I bought pre-made parts (wheels, axles, pre-weighted car body). PRetty much all we did was paint and stick the wheels on. This year, my son wants to do it himself. He does not want pre-bought stuff on his car. So, I am trying to learn as much as I can. We have really tough competition in our pack. The boy that finished second for the championship in District behind my son is in our pack. His dad owns a machine shop. It is hard to compete with that! I am here to learn all that I can!!! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Oh, my name is Teresa and I live in north Texas with my hubby (who isn't the least bit interested in the PWD-- which I do not understand! LOL!), my 13 yo daughter and my 10 yo son, Ethan. Our first year in the derby my son's car sucked (didn't know anything that year). The next year, I educated myself and Ethan won the championship-- it was awesome! I have been totally bitten by the PWD bug!

Welcome! I'm glad to hear that your son wants to not only win the race but OWN the victory all on his own! In order to get the best advice the others will want to be knowing the race date and the rules you have to follow. If there is a link to the rules online that would be great! Thanks for joining in and lets get you all the information you can use! BTW, there are a few people from TX on the board so maybe one of them is in your area and can provide specific resources that may be available for your races beyond the Pack level (District,Council).

Hey ScoutMom,
From one Texan to another -- Howdy!!! I hail from south Texas. Houston to be exact. You will get tons of awesome advice on this board. But like Mr. Slick said, first the experts will need to know the rules and the time frame. What you do to go fast is in part a function of what your rules allow you to do, and what you have time to do.
Let us know.
