Hey again fellow racers.
Sorry to be a pest, but we're running out of daylight, and it just occurred to me that I may not be able to take my cars on the plane in my carry on bag -- which is what I had planned to do. Any of you ever try to board an airplane with pinewood derby cars? Did you have any trouble? If so, any suggestions about how to get them to Lima? I don't want to pack them in my suitcase. Thought about overnighting them to my hotel on Thursday, but not sure that is the best option either.
Any recommendations? Thanks.

We carried on all of the cars last year...
But it was kinda fun running the boxes through the X-ray machine
You should of seen the people looking at the monitor... ;D ;D ;D
We had no problem at Salt Lake Airport... But when we went home from Cleveland, Ohio airport it was kinda of funny...
They had to look at the boxes really close and they held up the line for awhile trying to figure out what the heck was in there... I'm just wondering what they were thinking when you look at a Pinewood derby car in an X-ray machine... Probably looks pretty darn scary.... 7" shapes with 4 axles poking out on all 4 corners then something very solid in the rear all clumped up in one spot. They had to get 3 more people to look at the x-ray. ;D After they were done with the x-ray they had to call someone special to come and take a another look, and told us to open the cases up... We did and they started to undo the cars and the packing. but we said if your going to take all of these out then you are going to be here for 2 hours putting all of them back in cause thats how long it took to pack them up.. ;D ;D ;D
They decided to not go through the whole thing and let us go ahead...
I think if you only bring a couple of cars then you shouldn't have a problem... I took my case to the airport a few days before we left and asked them if it will be alright to bring this onboard. They said it should be fine...

I was thinking about calling the airline today if I have time and asking them the same question. See if they can give me some information. If I get any info I will let you know. I have 7 cars and my plan right now is to take them on carry on and hope there are no issues.

I'm wondering about transport too. Should the cars get the front seat or does the wife? Do I have to pay for each car on the toll roads or just the one I'm driving at the time? Are we there yet? How many more miles? Where is the next break going to be? Just trying to get ready for the 1,600 mile trip. . . . side trip on the way back to visit relatives.

Take a picture of the inside of the box with cars inside before you close it up, and bring it with you. That way they can hold it up next to the X-ray and understand what you are trying to explain to them about axles, weight pocket, etc. that is showing up boldly on the X-ray. Maybe bring a "clunker" in your carryon that you could pull out and show them? Might grease the skids a little...

Gives a new meaning to "50 cents per axle" I thought the wife would be holding the cars on her lap so that she could hold them up in the air if you hit any potholes. Unless she's having a soda, of course, then she would have to put them away.

Hello All...
I called the airline yesterday and they didn't think it would be a problem but they couldn't say for certain. They went through the list of prohibited items with me on the phone and 7" pinewood derby cars with slick paint jobs wasn't on the list. ;D
They told me that if screwdrivers under 7" long were now permitted on carry on then small 1"nails should make it through. They did suggest that if your cars are packed so they are difficult to unpack and show security, then maybe bring one that you can easliy take out and show if needed.
They also suggested calling TSA for more info, which I have not done.
I am going to pack em up and take em on and hope for the best.
Good luck, see you there!

Well, I'm glad to report that none of the interstate toll booths stopped us or charged us extra for carrying our cars with us. We have made it to Lima and are hanging out at the hotel waiting for things to get rolling. . . . when's supper? ;D See you at the races!
