Here's a list of some things I liked to change/discuss in the NSC rules 1. There's a couple places where statements should be moved from the info/guideline box to a rule. In one case, it opened up a loophole which allowed wheels to run on top of the rail. 2. Should clarify rules around wheel weights and shields. Probably just need an info box to discuss these. 3. Add pictures / diagrams to clarify the wheel dimensions. 4. Discuss the current "new old stock" (NOS) wheels and how we will address these. For background ... www.shop.derbydad4hire.com/The-Predator-24-set-of-4-wheels-W-P24.htm . Maybe we do nothing, but we should at least discuss whether we want $65 wheels in scout races. 5. Discuss allowing staggered wheel bases. I'm not a big fan of this, but maybe we should allow it in the spirit of promoting cheap and easy experimentation.

Yes, yes, and yes. Photos will be a major add this next year. If possible we will also add some videos on how to build the cars to the rules. Do we mention the "acceptable wheels" by vendor or just use the photos to demonstrate what is not allowed? My issue with doing "acceptable wheels" is then we have to start listing all the legal parts, axles, weights, fenders, wheel windshields, lubes, and so on.
That's the beauty of the info boxes. We can list *example* wheels from vendors that are legal as a way to clarify the rules. The rules, however, remain written to be vendor/product agnostic.

The 65 dollar wheel would be illegal because weight is removed from inside the wheel. "Weight is removed from the outside and inside of the wheel"

The rules state all BSA wheel lettering must remain intact, but do not state which vintage (e.g. 2009, 1996, etc.) are allowed. Because of this loophole, we have seen pre-1996 wheels on cars racing in our Pack's open class division, probably taken from cars raced by dads when they were a scout. I can see the advantage of 1996 wheels where rules specifically state a minimum weight (e.g. 2.0g, 2.4g, et cetera) but I'm not sure they would be an advantage where there's no minimum weight, only a minimum height (e.g. 1.16"). Maybe Twisted Iron could make and test a set of 1996 wheels based on NSC rules and let us know. 5. Discuss allowing staggered wheel bases. I'm not a big fan of this, but maybe we should allow it in the spirit of promoting cheap and easy experimentation. I too have never been a fan of the look of staggered wheelbases. I don't think kids like the look either, in fact I've heard many kids point out saying it looks wrong/weird when they see a NDFW reversed or a NDFW a different color than other 3 wheels. Seems to me a staggered wheelbase design would be more of a push from the parent rather than something the scout would come up with on their own. I can hear the conversation now... "Son, if we want to compete with the top racers we need to stagger the wheels." "But dad, that looks freaky, other kids will make fun of it, I don't want a car that looks like that!"

I'd like the rules for the three new open class divisions to be NSC Rules.

I would say that all classes running that day would be the NSC rules, just to keep check-in reasonable.
The staggered wheels is something that evolved from leagues and few outside of leagues would know about it. The same with the use of a guide pin on the front. When I stepped in the rules that were in place allowed for 3 wheels and it was obvious that only the league connected boys were running that style and they just ran away with the trophies.
I want the Cub Scout SKILLS to be the main factor for the car's performance and not the parts or design.

I have some pre 09 wheels, but they are heavy in stock form. 3.4 g I will cut a set for the June race.we also need to clarify the washer rule, as I had quite a DISCUSSION at my district race, they had no clue on the rules period.

TwistedIron Now I can appreciate folks volunteering their time and helping out with inspections, we can't thank them enough. However, it amazes me the number of race inspectors that have never read the rules. That's why I always carry a copy of the rules with me, just in case the opportunity to educate someone presents itself.
