MicroMark has their variable speed mini drill, which is similar to the Proxxon, on sale for $185 and change.
I have the standard one - no var. speed and really like it.

That is actually a Cameron drill press, just re-branded. They are very good quality and the price is not that bad compared to other high end micro drills, like a Servo. But Proxxon and Micro-Mark are way more affordable and will more than suffice for drilling axle holes for Pinewood Derby cars. Check Cameron out here: www.cameronmicrodrillpress.com/

i guess the Cameron would be massive overkill for drilling axle holes. thanks, guess a Micro-Mark mini goes on the short list.

I also recommend the Micro-Mark variable speed drill press. I have it and have found it to be very accurate. When used with the proper equipment such as a good drill bit, it will drill perfect holes.

I am happy with the proxxon with the x-y table and the block. Very nice...
I considered the Cameron press (Get the one with the collet if you do.) However the proxxon works great.
