Guys, Our pack has gone waaay overboard on the rules. There are 10 pages of rules that I guess they expect everyone to go by. But how will they enforce them? My question is this; In the rules it says"racers can use supplemented parts but no replacement parts allowed. What do ya'll think is meant by that.
Thanks, Scotty

A lot of packs go overboard with their rules thinking that it "levels" the playing field, but usually all it does it create more problems by making it hard to enforce the rules and confusing the people that are trying to build the cars (especially first time builders). I have heard of packs with rule BOOKS with over 30 pages in them !! To answer your question...IMHO the rule is contradictory of itself. If you are supplementing a part, you are replacing it. I would have to assume, that what they mean or meant to say was one of two things. A) You can replace a part if you need to, but no "aftermarket" parts are to be used or B) That you cannot replace the part with another brand...pine-car axles, pine-car or awana wheels, etc... basically that all replaced parts must be BSA parts. I would approach the PWD Chairperson or whoever is in charge and ask them to clarify it for you. If they can't, ask them why the rule is there to begin with then !! Good Luck !! Lucky 13

Well to me, it means that you can use spare bsa parts but not aftermarket parts. Like other parts from the bsa kits, wheels / ect or wood. but not vendor parts.
The rules are becoming more strict, because the packs want to prevent the use of performance based parts sold by vendors.
Many packs and committees, feel what pinewood derby is about, is parents and kids working on a car together. Not about winning and having the goal to win and go to distrcit or council.
While is may be a un realistic pack committee goa. Especiallly with the fact that Bsa has increased there advertising and offer more items for pinewood derby.
There race into scouting not to long ago. Pretty much creates a conflict with the overall view of many packs.
Since the packs are left up to there own rules and there own view of the race, how it should be run, ect, ect. This creates a national mess.
BSA pinewood derby items, are one of the biggest money makers for bsa ! When it comes to products they sell.
The biggest revenue is still donations and grants.
Bsa means big money anymore. Did you know some of them make over $500,000 a year at national ? or that many council or district top dogs are making well over $80,000 a year.
Yeps. It's approaching 40-50% of the donations and from sales, now go to paying for there salaries, ins. and some have retirement plans.
Yet council or districts or national rarely give back to the local level packs and events they host or put on. Leaving the packs strapped for cash.
I at this past years council got to hear a speach on why the winners were getting smaller trophies for the council winners of the race. Due to the economy.
Yet I seen the the year prior in the 501.3.c tax filing, they had a $500,000 surplus.
Then the packs pay a few for those winners to race at council. I am now wondering where all the money goes ?
$35 entry fee the pack pays per pack for the winners who go to council. The council is comprised of 7 districts. Also this is alot of packs sending in this money for the race.
i have bought and went and got the trophies when I use to run the cubmobile race. 1st,2nd,3rd place trophies for 5 ranks, plus a best of show for each rank. So like 25 trophies, ranging in size from 6 inches to 12 -14 inches. Only cost us $332.00
So Im gonna say that they do double that due to runner up class, plus a few more trophies. I'm gonna say that $1,000 to $1,200 is what they are likely paying for trophies, give or take a couple of hundred. Depending on the deal they they get for such a big order.
I would surely say we are talking over 100 packs. They also get some of the food donated and either rent the area for the race or the gets done by a 5013c that the school gets to use fro tax break.
Then all the people who donate there time and the tracks and set up. thats the people you got to really thank and be greatfull for.
Then they have to grumble about not having money to buy the bigger trophies.
sorry to ramble on, but i think i am able to start sensing the issue is not what it always apears to be.

I think what they mean by supplemental is things like fenders, windshields, drivers etc, but not replacement parts, like DW, JE, Pine car etc.
As far as district and council level, I inquired here about doing a council race, they told me no, they wont even look at it, and that they dont even encourage a district race, but allow those districts with a history of it to do so. Our district race is run by a pack and troop, they use their old challenger track with placing only finish line, on an outdated double elimination system (which screwed Damien out of third place in rank last year) they get all the money from the entry fees (5 bucks a car times 200 cars) the concession stand, which opeartes all day long, and they get 2000 from a local power plant to be a title sponsor. I offered to take it over last year, but the guy in charge would have to die for him to give that up.

There are other rules that also seem to contradict themselves. Our Pack or troup or whatever it's called is the most unorganized bunch I have ever seen. I am The U-5, U-6, boys soccer commissioner and have coached my son for the last three years. Well, I thought the soccer bunch was unorganized. They don't have anything on the bunch of jug heads that run the scouts here.
It is very frustrating trying to get a straight answer about something.
