Novice Division Rules
The novice class is intended for less experienced builders and those who are new to proxy racing. Builders who finish in first place in the Novice class at PwdRacing three times and earn 30 points, or those who place first or second in any non-novice division points race at PwdRacing are strongly encouraged to disqualify themselves from the Novice Division. PwdRacing reserves the right to disqualify from the Novice Division builders who are new to PwdRacing but who are experienced racers in other proxy leagues.
BODY:
1. The main body structure must be made of pinewood.
2. Car Specs:
A. Width - Not to exceed 2 3/4 inches
B. Length - Not over 7 inches
C. Weight - Not over 5 ounces on scale accurate to 1/10 ounce.
D. Height- Not to exceed 2 3/4 inches
E. Center Rail Width Clearance – 1 3/4 inches minimum.
F. Bottom Clearance - at least 3/8 inches from track. Fender flairs with less clearance are acceptable as long as the center rail width clearance is the same in rule E.
G. Wheelbase – No wheelbase restriction.
3. The car design may be enhanced by the addition of other stable materials such as plastic or metal. Any additions must be firmly attached and meet Car Size Requirements.
4. No part of the car body may protrude in front of the starting peg.
5. These items are PROHIBITED:
A. Springs
B. Starting devices, propellants, or magnets
C. Electronic or lighting devices
D. Liquids, wet paint, oil, sticky substance, or powders of any kind (other than axle lubrication)
E. Glass or excessively fragile parts
F. Wheel bearings, bushings or inserts
G. Loose objects on car
WHEELS:
6. BSA, Pinecar, Pine-Pro or Awana wide wheels are the only wheels allowed for the novice racing division. Outer wheel surface may be lightly sanded, shaved, or polished to remove surface imperfections and mold casting burrs, but must not be reshaped in any way in an attempt to lighten the wheel, minimize tread contact or alter aerodynamics. Tread surface must be flat and parallel to the wheel bore. Coning the hubs and truing the inside edge is allowed. Wheel width may not be less than 7.5 mm.
7. The following wheel modifications are PROHIBITED:
A. Wheels may not be rounded, tapered, grooved, V-cut, H-cut, narrowed or otherwise reshaped in any way.
B. Altering of wheel profile
C. Drilling sidewalls
D. Hollowing, sanding, or otherwise removing or modifying plastic material from inside the wheel.
E. Filling of any wheel surface with any type of material
8. There must be at least four wheels on the car., however, it is not required that all four wheels make contact with the track surface.
9. Each wheel must be mounted on an axle, on the outside of the car, in the vertical position. Each wheel must be attached directly to the car by an axle and spin freely. No part of the wheel may overlap the center guide by more than 1/8 inch.
AXLES:
10. Nail, pin and/or solid rod type axles are allowed with an overall diameter of no less than .084 inches. Some polishing and/or modification is allowed as long as overall diameter is not reduced. Axles may be grooved. The depth of the groove(s) is not limited, as long as the journal portion of the axle (i.e., the part the wheel actually rotates on) has a diameter no less than .084 inches.
11. Axles must not be connected to any device that mechanically alters rotation and spin.
12. Axles must be mounted into the wood sections of car. Drilled holes or slots can be used.
13. Lubricants must be dry on the axle at race time. Wet, oily, or greasy axles are not allowed. Over-application of lubricant which results in excessive shedding onto the track is not allowed. Approved lubricants include (but are not limited to) graphite, Teflon, Nyloil, and Krytox.
14. Cars may be reclassified or disqualified if they are determined by the race officials to not meet these requirements
