I took over as Derby Chair this year for our Pack.We are having 2 workshops and a test & tune the Friday night before our pack race. Do to the fact that the workshops are being held at the church where we have our den meeting we are limited on the tools we will have available and the time we can have the church. Due to this fact I went to my father-in-laws wood shop and cut some cars on his band saw. All the cars are a basic wedge and are just rough cut. Am I wrong in doing this? I just thought it would save some time for the boys instead of having to cut them out using hand saws. This is also our first time having workshops and the test & tune, any suggestion or ideas would be appreciated.

I have several profiles/designs for beginners. If I had to pre-cut the profiles I would do a variety of them. Do you have a chance to cut some more? I can find the original drawings tomorrow and get them posted. There are several designs in this photo of a workshop. . . huge image - zoom in yo get a good look at the designs. www.pwdracing.com/photos/workshop/workshop-2005-WorkshopDesign.html

Thanks Warren, I will check back to see if you get those posted. I was thinking if I just offered one or two styles I wouldn't have boys arguing over the bodies?
Thanks, Bob

Had our first workshop this weekend. I had a great time helping the boys. We had 5 kids show up and just as many adults to help. We even talked one of the moms into building a car for the "outlaw" race !! Looking forward to next weekend and another workshop.

Congrats on having the workshop being a success! I enjoy seeing the kids come up with their own personalized designs.
At the one last Sunday, one boy had me drill a hole all the way through his car in front of the front axle. . . next thing I know I'm getting more requests for those "Awesome Holes" in cars!

The workshops are over and I'm happy to say they were a huge success !! The second one seen more boys than the first. I was very happy to see the parents stick around and help instead of just dropping their boy off and leaving !! The Pinewood Derby is next weekend and districts the following. Proxy racing this weekend and BSA races the next 2 weeks !! I love it !!
