Welcome to the PWD Racing message board. You made it! Please leave a note/post a reply to confirm that you have found the place and to say hello to others who will be joining us. Thanks! Hi. I found your board and have a question about timing. My son and his friend, both members of Cub Pack 260 have been inspired to study various lubricants and their effects on the speed of a pinewood car for their fourth grade science project. We have been given a homemade track which should be adequate, but we have no timing system. Is there a way to create or purchase something like this from Radio Schack, or does any one have something available to loan? This is a one time project. We want to get reproducable times without breaking the bank. Our original intent was to simply neasure distance travelled, but the physical setup currently prevents this. They plan to run their experiment in the next two weeks. Thanks -Bill

Bill, Welcome to the PWDR boards. I hope you find the site useful !! You can probably put together a timing system relatively cheap for your project by visiting your local Radio Shack. A couple micro-switches and a timing device such as a stop watch hard wired into them can accomplish what you are looking to do. I'm sure if you talk to a sales person there they could put you in the right direction !! Good luck with the project.

When would you like to borrow a timer?
You would need a 9 pin serial port to get the results but otherwise I have something that you could borrow. It is based on a MicroWizard timer system. You could adapt it to most any track. Four sensors.

I want to extend a big Texas welcome to our newest member, BigTex. He is not only a fellow Texan, but a fellow Houstonian as well (OK, so he's not exactly a Houstonian, but pretty dang close -- as we say in the south). He also happens to build a real fast car. Oh, and lets all wish BigTex Jr. the best of luck this weekend at the District Scout race. You can do it.

Just thought I'd drop a quick line and say hello. I've been lurking on the board for a little while, and recognize a lot of names from another board I'm active on! We're very active in PWD but wasn't even aware of proxy racing until a couple of months ago! Unfortunately, (or maybe fortunately!) we don't have much competition at pack or district, although we've been working through workshops to increase the level of competition! (only brite spot was my two oldest boys and my open class car smoking an ebay car at district! ;D) Was thinking about sending in a car for the June Rookie race, but it looks like our times are about .02-.03 slow. I guess there's still a few tricks I need to figure out! (still can't figure out those white disks!) LOL My better half already claims to be a pinewood widow for 3 months out of the year..... wonder how she'll like the idea of the extended season!

Hey 3cubdad: Welcome to PWDRacing. There is only one way to know for sure how your cars stack up, and that's by sending them it to race. The .02-.03 you mentioned could just be the difference between the track used here and the one you race on. Anyway, we have a blast on race day and would love to have you join in. A bunch of our wives will likely soon be forming a PWD Widows support group. Their plan is to get together on race day and shop til they drop while we're racing -- that'll teach us. Something for Mrs. 3cubdad to consider. By the way, someone on this board knows something about "those little white disks" so ask away!!! ProQuest/Steve H.

I was a little confused by your comment. Is there a problem with sending in a scout car? Steve

I think perhaps, in a very diplomatic way, Kelly (JK) was hinting that the scout car he referred to might not be competitive at the Proxy League level. As fast as his cars are I'm not so sure that will be the case, but I'm guessing that is what he meant. Regardless, all builders and all cars are welcome and encouraged to join in. An "Open" class car might not conform to the Novice Division rules, but no worries, if not it will be reassigned to the division for which it qualifies. ProQuest/Steve H.

3cub, pwd sugests that after winning the novice division 3 times that you move on to other divisons. We do not run novice anymore so i was just making sure that no one had a problem with us running for one month in novice. We know that my sons car can't keep up with cars that have light wheels ,since the last 3 derbys we were beat by cars with light wheels.very discouraged with scout racing this year, jacobs car did well this year the only 3 cars he lost to had lightened wheels. i don't know why they need to do that.

Kelly,
Thanks. We could have a whole thread on Cubs and lightened wheels. Don't get me wrong, I love them in the outlaw class, (and here now!), but we don't allow them in our district. We actually started weighing wheels at districts this year!
My first entry here is going to be into novice class because it's an extended wheel base with standard wheels!
